Just visit a Chennai mall on a Sunday. One in two in that crowd is sporting joggers, track pants, workout tees, or those leggings that everyone seems to be wearing these days, whether they’re headed to the gym or not. That’s athleisure for you. Garments that are athletic in style and style-friendly at the same time, and work as well for a coffee run as for a workout.
Why Tamil Nadu is a Place to Watch
This is not just happening on Instagram, there is real money involved. Activewear brand TechnoSport inked an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government in August 2026 at the Vettri Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave, for expansion of its Erode plant to the tune of ₹130 crore. The company states it will generate over 500 jobs and increase its activewear fabric production from 25 to 40 tonnes a day by end-FY27.
Include the knitwear factories of Tiruppur, the textile mills of Coimbatore and the emerging units of Erode, and you have a complete activewear belt here within the state. The Tamil Nadu government has been promoting sports and technical textiles as well, so this is not a flash-in-the-pan kind of thing. Brands want to find local expertise for design and they prefer to recruit locally rather than bring someone down from Mumbai or Bengaluru.
Activewear Isn’t Just “Simple” Clothes
Most people think sportswear is simple. Pair of plain tee, plain pant, and voila. Not at all. An effective piece of activewear needs to give in different directions, breathes, stays in place while you move and look attractive at the same time. Miss the seam placement and it chafes. Choose the wrong fabric and it is see through when you squat. Hence why quality brands invest in talented designers and hence why they are in high demand.
Skills Needed
Fabric knowledge. Lycra blends, polyester knits, mesh inserts and moisture wicking fabrics all react differently to cotton.
Stretch pattern making. Knit patterns have a negative ease which means they are cut smaller than your body. It’s a whole different skill.
Fit and feel. You aren’t designing for a photo shoot, just for squats, sprints, and yoga poses.
Trend aware. Colour drops, collabs and print releases are a constant, and shopping teams need to keep the offering up-to-date.
Jobs in This Space
Activewear designer, technical designer, pattern maker, fabric sourcing executive, merchandiser and product developer-these are just some of the roles brands and exporters hire for. A lot of students also launch a small, online gym-wear or yoga-wear label. With print-on-demand and Instagram shops, you can try out a small collection of 20 or 30 styles before investing heavy.
Where to Start
Your first must-have is a solid foundation in garment construction, fabrics and pattern making, which FIDA The Design School in Kilpauk offers in a 2 Years Advanced Program in Fashion Design, with industrial visits to Tiruppur to observe the process of knitwear manufacture. Build your base first, identify your area of interest later. Activewear is definitely one such area. Even a couple of gym wear or yoga wear sketches in your portfolio will give you an advantage in interviews.
